It was obvious the first time we punched the throttle on the Fighter 550
and watched it leap across the water that this was not a normal beginner
boat. Its sleek, low- profile design keeps as little of the hull in
contact with the water's surface as possible, leaving the powerful
Mabuchi 550 motor free to do its thing without a lot of drag. In fact,
when powered by a 7-cell stick battery pack, the Fighter 550 practically
rides on the prop and straight-line speeds approach the 15-mph range on
a fresh charge. Trust us-it's a blast.
While the fast, three-hour assembly time of the regular Fighter 550
kit isn't bad, we have to admit that being able to leave the hobby shop
and head straight to the pond with the ready-to-run version is much more
gratifying. The kit version will still have its place with folks who
already have a radio or simply want to choose the radio control system
they want to use.
The Fighter 550 RTR's preinstalled radio equipment is 100% JR(r) and
as good as anything you would choose for yourself. The transmitter
that's included is JR's tried-and- true Python pistol grip that features
analog trim dials so you can fine tune throttle and steering. On board
is JR's reliable R-102 AM Mini Receiver and two Z250 Standard Race
Servos: one for steering and one for the mechanical speed control.
The only thing the boat does not include is a 6- or 7-cell stick
pack, a charger, and 8 "AA" batteries for the transmitter. With a
typical 6-cell battery like Dynamite's 1500mAh Dyna-Sport pack, the
Fighter 550 RTR can reach speeds of as much as 13 mph and will run for
about 5 1/2 minutes on a full charge. And for real kicks try Dynamite's
2000mAh Ultra-Sport 7-cell pack, especially if you want to race. The
extra cell gives you quicker acceleration and boosts the top speed to 15
mph.
